2016 Surf Expo – Premiers and Beers and Gear

BuyWake.com Does Surf Expo

Once a year major players in the wake, surf, and skate communities travel to Orlando, Florida, for the madness that is Surf Expo.  Every established brand is there and every new brand with their new product is there to say, “Hey, look at me!”  As the well-established wake-specific ecommerce business that we are, we do our part and attend for a few reasons.  This year one of the biggest reasons to attend was to be a part of the Alliance Wake Premiers and Beers video releases.  Our team rider and up-and-coming videographer, Cole Vanthof, has been working on a few projects that we and Ambush Board Co. wanted to share with the world.

The main video is the final project of a series from the boys down at Valdosta Wake Compound.   The Coalition web edit series that the boys did this past year was hot fire…so it only made sense to made The Coalition The Movie.  Cole not only had his hand in filming, but he also had some sick riding in it as well.  Next up was a video project we did with team rider, Alex Graydon.  Cole spent two months with Alex filming all around his home in Alabama.  Yes, Alabama has some pretty sweet lakes, and Alex has a home Sesitec 2.0 setup called The Woods.  The appropriately titled ALa-Cruzin was a huge success and everyone in attendance went wild.  You can now view it in its entirety HERE on Alliance.  Another video project Cole had been working on was with team rider and rising young buck, Blake Bishop, fittingly titled UNTAMED.  Cole and Blake filmed at #BTOWNCOMPOUND, Blake’s personal cable park, and hit some heavy winch missions from the Atlanta streets to the Allatoona creeks.  It’s a super diverse video and the crowd’s reaction was at an all-time high!  Everyone was feeling the film and its trap track that went so perfectly with the edit.  If you know Blake, then you’ll understand the music no doubt.  Alliance Wake will be dropping the full-length part on Monday, September 19th, so…get ready. 2016 WWA Nautique Wakeboard National Championships

You Win Some, You Lose Some

We had the pleasure of being on-site with our Ambush Board Co. family this past weekend for the Nautique Wakeboard Championships, and it was everything we knew it would be.  Our team riders Mike Dowdy and Massi Piffaretti both were on fire for Friday’s quarterfinals with a 90.33 and 90.00, respectively, so we knew Saturday was going to be lit.  The day of the finals was super rad – families, chicks, dogs, just about everyone was on the beach enjoying the hot summer day with equally hot action on the water.  One of the most legendary spots to watch the event is from the row of boats floating just outside the contest run, but you really need to wear your drinking helmet if you’re going to do that, because that crew likes to party.  Heading into semifinals we saw all our boys make it through plus some heavy runs by friends JD Webb and Noah Flegel, who are no strangers to the massive Nautique G23 wake.  Once it got to the finals the shoreline went ballistic for Massi as he was slaying his run – blind pete, heavy 9, the zero – but his last trick, the double flip, didn’t quite pan out for him this day.  Most the guys did some pretty solid riding, but the last rider off the dock was Mike Dowdy, and his focus and determination was at an all-time high.  Mike had a super solid run and on his second pass.  Unfortunately, he came up short on a mobe 5, or…should we say long.  See…once you are on your second pass there are 3/4 markings, and if you fall past those markings, you don’t get picked up.   The toughest part was that it appeared he fell right on the line, which would have allowed him (like other riders the day before) a shot at getting back up and finishing out two more tricks.  With a heavy hand down from the judges, Mike was deemed past the line and not allowed to complete his run.  Mike kept his composure (better then most people, I’m sure) and that meant there would be a new winner.  Australian Tony Iaconni took the top spot that day and earned his first win, and was followed by fellow Australian, Nic Rapa.  Good ole American boy and Nautique team rider, Noah Flegel, finished in third. Wakeboard History with Eddie Beverly

Wakeboard History 101

A Phone Interview with Eddie Beverly

Eddie Beverly has been our Hyperlite rep since day one.  We have grown our business and our friendship together over the years, all the while listening to him tell some of the funniest and most captivating and informative stories.  The one thing we want you all to know is that Eddie is the truth.  This guy was and is a part of wakeboarding history, having been there when the first wakeboard was made and when the term “wakeboard” was coined.  Eddie has been committed to growing the sport since its birth, and has played a key role in developing the Hyperlite brand.  Can you imagine the things he has seen while traveling with the legends Parks Bonifay and Scott Byerly?  Dude is a legend…surrounded by legends.  Eddie has been doing Hyperlite for 30 years.  He is most likely more physically fit then you, and has a way better tan.  We want to share with you a few of his stories, and not so much in a podcast format, but in what a typical phone conversation would be like.  There are a few gems in this 18+ minute conversation…so pay close attention.  I could have let him talk for hours on end, but I’m thinking about making a few more of these in the future with even better, funnier stories.  Eddie is in Seattle right now checking out the 2017 Hyperlite line, and I can’t wait for him to get back and get us some sneak peaks of the goods!
