The Darwinism of Wakeskating

The Darwinism of Wakeskating

Remember the ol’ Sfumato days when wakeskating was predominately done behind a boat?  With the development of wakeskating and the increasing overall technicality of tricks being thrown everyday, it’s obvious why riders are choosing to take a different approach to riding.  And, of course, we having to drain your pockets to pay for filling up your boat is another obvious reason.  But, is riding behind a boat becoming a thing of the past for new, up-and-coming wakeskaters?

I do not necessarily think so, however, the influences of wakeskating are definitely taking more of a turn towards winch, cable, and PWC; and have ben doing so for quite some time.  Who can deny it, though?  You can learn so much behind the ski, and at a faster pace; you can hit spots that are considered unthinkable with a winch; and cables are popping up all over the place.  Getting out there behind the boat, unfortunately, seems as though it may become a lost art. Making a Wakeboard with Scott Bouchard of Byerly and Hyperlite

Scott Bouchard’s name is synonymous with innovation, especially when it comes to wakeboard designs. He is the man behind the first finless Hyperlite Byerly pro model, the radical Hyperlite Byerly design from 2005 that featured four cut-away sections for water channelling, and countless other successful pro model wakeboards. His track record has earned the trust of top-tiered professional wakeboarders like JD Webb and Aaron Rathy, who recently commissioned Scott to R&D their 2014 shapes.

“After seeing Butch’s R&D facility first hand, then having him explain the wakeboard construction process, we could really see how much a Master he is at his craft”, explains BuyWake.com Creative Director, Derek Davis. “Butch probably understands hydrodynamics better than a Scientist.” Read More >

JD Webb at BSR for Hyperlite

JD Webb is well known for his abilities on Wakeboard Features so we brought him to Texas for Spring Break where he could put those skills to the test at BSR Wake Park. JD had never visited the park but his eyes lit up as soon as we arrived and he was like a kid in a candy shop the entire week. Spencer Norris followed JD around and put this clip together for our enjoyment. The crew at BSR let us move some things around and it didn’t take JD long to maneuver a kicker in front of their new kink-rail.”

Team Hyperlite Hits Bethany Creek

Here’s an inside glimpse into one of the Hyperlite team traditions, the annual Spring team gathering. Here’s what the boys have to say:

“Every spring the Hyperlite Wakeboard crew gets together to ride our new Wakeboards, take some photos and film for videos.” Hyperlite explains. “Here Rusty and Trever have a magical GoPro set, Raimi stomps a solid off axis 7, Mike and Trever both bend their knees, JD does two flips in one and Stewart almost pays the piper.”
